Find Your Skin Cancer Risk Factors

The American Cancer Society (ACS) publishes a detailed report each year projecting how many people in the US are likely to develop certain cancers, including skin cancer. It includes the latest information on risk factors, early detection, treatment, and more. Here are some of the key skin cancer facts:
  • Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are the most commonly diagnosed skin cancers in the US. They’re also called non-melanoma skin cancer. They are diagnosed in more than three million people each year.
  • Almost all cases of non-melanoma skin cancer can be cured if found and treated early.
  • Roughly 96,500 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma in 2019, and more than 7,000 will die.
  • Before age 50, more women are diagnosed with melanoma than men. By age 65, though, the rates for men are double that of women.
  • A recent study by ACS researchers showed that most cases of deaths from melanoma are potentially preventable.
  • The five-year relative survival rate for melanoma of the skin is 92 percent. When found before it has spread, the survival rate is 98 percent.
  • While only about one percent of skin cancers are melanomas, it accounts for most of the deaths.
